Web design for contractors: what your site needs to win the job

Say who you are, what you do and where you work, so the homeowner calls.

The demo line is answered by an AI phone agent.

A homeowner hears your name, then checks your site before they call. In a few seconds it has to say who you are, what you do, where you work and how to reach you. This is what a contractor website needs, and three ways to get one.

What a contractor website needs

  • Your phone number at the top, as a tap-to-call link on a phone.
  • The work you do, named plainly: roofing, electrical, painting, remodels, whatever you really do. One clear page per main service.
  • The towns you work in, named. "Roofer in Temecula, Murrieta and Menifee" tells a homeowner they are in the right place.
  • Your contractor license number. California's contractor board (CSLB) says the license number belongs in your advertising, and its bulletin names websites.
  • Real photos of your own jobs, not stock photos.
  • A way to ask for an estimate or book a time without calling.
  • A link to your Google reviews, so a stranger can see what your customers say.
  • A page that loads fast and reads well on a phone, because that is where most people will see it.

Two rules from the contractor board

CSLB reminds licensed contractors to advertise within their classification, and not to advertise that they are bonded. It says breaking the advertising rules can lead to discipline and fines. Read its notice, and check your own site against it.

Three ways to get a contractor website

  • Build it yourself on a site builder. It is cheap, but you do the work and the upkeep, and it is easy to leave out the license number or the towns.
  • Hire a web design agency. You get a custom site. Ask what it costs every month, who owns the domain, and who makes the edits.
  • SnappLocal. A free hosted website for your trade, with a contact form, leads inbox and owner login. Chat, Reviews, Phone (with booking) and Site Care are optional paid add-ons; Complete includes Site Care.

A site is only half of it

When you are on a roof or under a house, the phone still rings. A site brings people to the phone. If the call goes to voicemail, the caller may try the next name. SnappLocal offers AI Phone as an optional paid add-on to answer calls, gather job details and book jobs on your calendar.

Call the demo line and talk to it the way one of your customers would. It takes two minutes.

Web design for local trades in Riverside County

SnappLocal builds websites for local trades and home-service businesses in Riverside, Temecula, Murrieta, Menifee, Corona, Lake Elsinore, Perris, Hemet and the towns around them. We name your towns on the site so a homeowner there knows you come to them.

A practical planning sheet

Before you choose a provider

SnappLocal.com builds for local trades. Use this brief with any website builder to decide what belongs on the site and what to test before you approve it.

Start with the job you want the site to do

Write down the work you want more of, the places you can reach and who answers the next inquiry. A remodel estimate, an urgent repair and a maintenance visit need different next steps. Decide whether the visitor should call, ask for an estimate or request a visit. Do not call a request a confirmed appointment.

Keep a list of your current website addresses before a rebuild. Note useful pages, photos and links that must carry over. A new homepage should not erase a service page customers still use. Ask where each old address will go.

  • Home: business name, main trade, actual service area and a clear next step.
  • Services: a page for each genuinely different job. Say what is included, what you do not take on and what you need to quote it.
  • Work photos: your own jobs, used with permission. Explain the work shown without inventing a result.
  • About: who runs the business, verified license details where relevant and how to reach you.
  • Contact: hours, phone and a short request form. Say who follows up.
  • Service areas: list places you really cover. A separate town page needs useful, distinct information.

Ask for a handover you can use

Know which account holds the domain and who controls it. Keep access to your registrar and business email. A website move should not change email records by accident. Ask what is backed up and how the old site can be restored if launch fails.

Ask what happens if you stop a paid service. Separate the domain, website files, photos, form messages and phone or chat tools in that answer. Which parts do you keep, which stop and how do you get your data? Read the current terms rather than relying on a sales call.

  • Who approves text and photos before launch?
  • How do I request changes, and which work needs a separate quote?
  • Where do requests go, and who checks they arrive?
  • Can you show the old-to-new URL map and how to restore the previous site?
  • Which accounts and exports do I keep if we part ways?

Check before you approve

  • Open the page on your phone. Can you name the trade, service area and next step without hunting?
  • Tap the phone link and check the dialer number; cancel before calling unless the business has agreed to a test.
  • With the owner's OK, send a test request and check the inbox. A thank-you screen alone does not prove delivery.
  • Try a blank required field and a bad email. The page should explain what to fix without losing the rest.
  • Check an old service URL and a made-up URL. The first should reach the right page; the second should show a real not-found page.
  • Ask for a mobile accessibility check and a backup/restore path before signing off.
